At present, 40 per cent of India's 1.2 billion population do not have a bank account. They face challenges such as exploitation from moneylenders, travelling considerable distances to get to banks and difficulty arranging finance due to lack of knowledge about approaching the banks and preparing the necessary documents. Through this project, which is focused on the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), the NTR Foundation identifies promising entrepreneurs in rural communities, recommends them to the bank to receive loans and provides ongoing support for the women. Women Forced to Walk Barefoot: Fear & Loathing in Rajasthan

by manishkumar on Jan 04, 2013      Category: Human Rights Tags: videovolunteers indiaunheard rajasthan gender
In Shambhu's village, the women are not allowed to cross the village square where the panchayat (council) holds its meetings with slippers on their feet. Even if they are carrying load or pots on their heads, the women have to remove their slippers and cross the few square meters on barefoot as a display of 'respect'. Non-compliance with the 'tradition' is besides the point. "No one dares question it," says Shambhu. Rajasthan is the state with one of the most skewered sex ratios in the country. Female foeticide is rife and in some regions, there are less than 800 women for every 1000 men.

The Ugly Indian

by vibhore on Aug 16, 2012      Category: Environment Tags: Garbage Disposal volunteering cleanup drive
We are a group of Ugly Indians (the number is growing everyday) who feel strongly about the state of visible filth in our cities. Our philosophy can be described simply as: Kaam chalu mooh bandh. Stop Talking, Start Doing. We believe in direct action, with a common-sense problem-solving approach. We do not finger-point or blame the system. We aim to make a change from within - one that sustains because everyone wants it and is comfortable with it. We believe that there is no magic wand, or silver bullet, to solve India's civic problems. We are realists, and acce
