Genesis: DALIT VIKAS ABHIYAN SAMITI is rights based civil society organization working towards empowerment of Dalitsand women through addressing factors of exclusion and advancement of their rights in close coordination and support from broader secular, democratic, progressive and egalitarian social movements without losing its dalit perspective.

The organization is committed to a people-centered and people controlled development model where establishment of dignity of Dalits is of paramount importance and their overall development, including social, economic, political and cultural, is central to all decisions made and processes evolved.

Over the last 15 years, its developmental interventions are attenuated to augment the increased participation of marginalized communities through various enabling strategies and programs such as Advocacy, sensitization, issue based campaigns, community capacity building and networking and to ensure fundamental socio-economic rights, including human rights, and resolutions of various National and International Bodies.

Our Vision:To establish a society where basic needs of the Dalit and underprivileged community people are fulfilled based on justice and more humane, respect and dignity for all human beings secured through liberty, equality and fraternity

Our Mission:To empower the Dalit and underprivileged community people at village level to maximize their potential and enable them to become independent and self-reliant through foster a conducive environment to enable the less privileged to assert their rights and live in dignity.

OUR GOAL:To build the capacities of discriminated groups to raise their voices and represent themselves in activities to combat Factors leading to exclusion, socio-economic discrimination and inequalities.

Periphery(GEOGRAPHICAL AREA OF WORK):
DVAS is currently working with unreached and underserved Dalit communities in around 85 Gram Panchayats and 235 villages all forming part of Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur Gaya and Nalanda, districts of Bihar, benefiting around 12000 poor and indigent Dalit communities.

• Fact finding of 85 cases of atrocities / Domestic violence against dalit
women and FIR with law.
• 118 women trained on livelihood options.
• Ambedkar Gram Samiti formed and working on sustained basis in 60 villages.
• Access to land rights by 70 marginalized families.
• Training on health schemes for 150 beneficiaries.
• Access to food security schemes by 68 beneficiaries
• Orientation on dalit leadership among 3000 dalit community members.
• 132 Women SHG formed and nurtured.
• Accredited by Credibility Alliance.

STEWARDSHIP OF THE ORGANIZATION:
The organization is the brain child of Mr. Dharmendra Kumar who hails from Dalit Community. Having closely encountered with severe forms of discrimination and denial, he championed the cause of empowering the community through education and awareness. A brief note on his background and his association with the current Organization is enumerated hereunder.

• Mr. Dharmendra Kumar is basically hails from a Dalit Community in rural parts of Bihar. Since his child hood, he got an opportunity to witness the ghastly incidents of caste based discrimination, abuse and exploitation. Despite of the hard work, this land less laborers used to live in utter poverty, disease and denial of their rights to live in dignity. They are land less, asset less and voiceless, unlettered community groping under the prangs of perpetual violence and exploitation in the hands of feudal system. Their women are abused and sexually exploited by the land lords. Their children are denied education and are engaged in hard labor from the very tender age. They are considered untouchables and denied entry to the public places including the place of worship. They are not allowed to draw water from public sources and severe punishments often followed by dejection were the order of the day. Out of all these ordeals, Mr. Dharmendra Kumar lifted himself up and completed his graduation. He worked with several organizations dealing with the social inclusion and after gaining considerable experience, he promoted Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti with an owed objective of ensuring the rights and decent livelihood to the Dalit communities as enshrined in our constitution and several National and International covenants. His dynamic leadership and vocal skills could emerge into a vibrant contemporary social movement for the rights of the Dalit communities and culminated into a National Dalit Centre for Human Rights ,Bihar which is currently acting as a network of Human Right advocates, rights practicitioners and intellectuals.
