This is a paper, included at the World Bank site, that analyzes the status of vocational education in India. While about 15 years old, this is still informative.

Author notes: "India has an extensive technical and vocational education system. This description of the national program may help distance educators in other countries."

The Technical/Vocational Education and Training is multi-sectoral in nature. Each ministry/department in Central as well as State Governaments is responsible for manpower development in that sector. While some offer regular formal or non-formal courses, others draw from the general pool of educated and trained manpower. It is important to take up some of the major sectors and discuss their characteristics. For this purpose, it is desired to take up the industrial, health, and some of the agricultural, educational and commercial sector courses as examples.
