Students make sewing machine operated cellphone charger

Shibin, Derek & Brian, researchers from UCSD, have developed a sewing machine operated cellphone charger (really cheap I am guessing) during their Internship in Mumbai. In their words "We don't know if this will ever get out of the lab, but we do know that there is a footpowered sewing machine in nearly every village in India, that there is a lot of unmet demand for electricity, people can charge Rs5 per charge, and that the poverty line in India is Rs10. " They have blog of their sewing machine project here.

In concept, the idea is parallel to the Pedal Power generator http://www.editthis.info/mozda_converter/Main_Page Ofcourse, the level of power generated in the two cases being very different. Some questions for the designers (Shibin et al):
1. How much power can the sewing machine generate?
2. Is it possible to charge rechargeable batteries (1.5V or higher) with that?

I corresponded with Derek, and came to know that, right now power is 2-4W, and batteries can be charged. Just that, in this basic ckt, output is fixed at 5V and can support upto 350mA. They are working on efficiency & output power so that more than one cellphone can be charged. Their target is 7.5W charger, for an attractive economic case.
