A nationwide census on weavers will be conducted in 2008. Photo IDs will be provided to the weavers. Several welcome insurance policies for the weavers of Varanasi as well as an International Trade Center similar to the Pragati Maidan in Delhi is proposed. Wevaers in Varanasi are facing a very difficult situation due to competition from powerloom industries of Surat and even China. Starvation, malnutrition, suicides are just a few of the ills that the weaver communities are facing.
