Improve infrastructure of Horticulture plant.
From its inception 50 years ago, one of the priorities of The Association of People with Disability for rehabilitation of the persons with disabilities is to provide training in various skills to enable them to be self reliant and be contributing members of the society.
A bold initiative taken by APD to this effect was to train disabled youths in Horticulture. The experiment undertaken during 1987 on a one acre land at Jeevan Bheema Nagar, Bangalore was such a great success that prompted APD to look for a bigger place. As a result, the Horticulture Training Centre on a 5 acre land provided by the Government of Karnataka at Kyalasnahalli, about 15 kms from Bangalore was established in the year 2001. The infrastructure such as dormitories, kitchen, dinning hall etc and the beautiful garden developed over the years by APD provide perfect environment not only for training but has a therapeutic value, to the trainees. A free residential 10 months’ training course in Horticulture is provided in two batches of 40 each, at a time. Most of the trained youths found gainful employment, as gardeners.
Mobility for people with disability is a crucial issue. One of the basic requirements is the provision of good tarred roads within the premises which provide convenient and comfortable mobility, particularly for both wheelchair users and people with crutches and calipers. Currently the roads are neither ‘wheelable’ nor ‘walkable’ for the trainees and their mobility is far from easy and comfortable, affecting the training program. The recent rains have made it worse.
Hence, there is an urgent need to provide tarred roads, which is estimated to cost around Rs. 9 lakhs. We seek your kind help in that. Even if you choose to contribute Rs.500/- or any amount you wish to, it will go long way in alleviating the difficulties of the trainees in moving around in the training centre, with ease and comfort.
We look forward to your kind support, as you have always given in the past – caring and sharing your joy. with us.
