HealthCare for All – the inaugural issue of Prayas
A decade ago, we were all worried about the access and quality of health care available to all, particularly the poor. Today, the State seems to have the funds and is willing to spend the same towards health for all. And not just the state, health care is now being provided largely in partnership with the private sector and in a few places, with civil society organisations.
Yet, the questions that loom before us are large and complicated.
Is the current model of insurance hurtling towards unaffordability in healthcare? Where is the accountability and governance in our systems? By looking primarily at tertiary care, are we abdicating responsibility towards preventing fast rising chronic illnesses and lifestyle diseases among the poor? Is the lion’s share of private providers in facilitating healthcare good? Are our community health workers equipped enough to help prevent disease? Do the poor even care to be treated?
Through a mix of ground reality reports, expert opinion and insights from practice, we bring you the good news – there is a lot of healthcare innovation out there; and the not so good news – we still have a long way to go in addressing all facets of the pyramid – from health education to tertiary care.
