Interesting idea, and quite similar in concept to Kiva.org. I think the reason these websites manage to get funding from so many people is that they are giving a personal touch to each request.. the donor (or "lender" as in case of Kiva) gets to know specifically what impact their $100 is having on whom.. as opposed to funding large organizations, where your money goes into a large pool of funds with no way to track your contributions in particular..
