Business and caste in India | With reservations | Economist.com

A good report on caste-based reservations in the private sector in India. It talks about the special training programs by Infosys, and whether they are just a "great opportunity for a tiny number of middle-class Indians, who happen also to be low-caste". And it touches upon the proven ineffectiveness of reservations to promote better education, but yet the policy might be unstoppable. "A massive deliberate confusion" is what describes it best, and it brings to question the ability of representative democracies to choose the rational path. But is it the political system at fault here, or rather the laziness of bureaucracies, policy architects, and the media in not scientifically studying the trends and spreading the right information to people to enable them to cast their votes rationally?
