BBC NEWS - Taking computers to rural India

Pradeep Lokhande is a unique social entrepreneur. He found that there is little information and market research available on the Indian villages, which is desired by many companies to tap the rural consumers. He visits the villages to compile information and sells it to the companies. With the earnings, he not only supports himself, but also provides educational facilities to the villages.

Having such an holistic approach is really impressive! I especially love the part about kids making short audio and video clips about their life. I believe this is really essential to bridge the mind-gap between urban and rural settings, and kids are the place to start. On a related note, a few girls from Dharavi were trained in film-making, and a film called 'She Creates' was released on Gandhi Jayanti: http://www.shecreates.org. Hopefully an online version will be made available soon.

Video Volunteers (http://www.videovolunteers.org/) does something very similar, but within a more formal framework: it sets up community video units in villages, where local people are trained on all aspects of video production and distribution. the people create their own video magazines and share them with nearby villages. Some of these videos get picked up by the mainstream media as well.
