BBC NEWS - India's poor tackle toxic e-waste

by hkhatri on Oct 01, 2007      Category: Environment Tags: environment health it

India is generating tons of e-waste from the old and used computers and there is hardly any policy and facility for it's disposal. The toxic lead has already made its way into the population and is threatening the IQ, specially, of growing children. It's literally a "brain drain".

E-waste (in general proper disposal of hazardous materials including chemicals, bio-waste etc) is an issue wanting much attention in India. Stricter rules do exist in other parts of the world and corporations or the consumer bears the cost of the implementation of such programs (Now electronics come with an e-waste tax in the US).

A few have risen to this threat though - Bangalore based Saahas (http://saahas.org/). Look particularly at their e-waste initiatives (http://saahas.org/ewaste.shtml)

Anybody know of any other similar organizations/efforts?

Ash recyclers (http://ashrecyclers.com/) and Saahas were profiled in Sattva's Dec 06 issue - Operation Detox. For more information on their processes and related topics, see http://www.itihas.org.in/SattvaDecember2006.pdf
