An Ancient Silk Trade Is Reborn in Cambodia
by kodysworld on Sep 08, 2007      Category: Arts & Culture Tags: silk arts crafts handloom
A large number of Cambodian families are headed by women whose only income may be from weaving or sewing. This article explains the different kinds of Cambodian silk and UNESCO's role in reviving this ancient art. (This is an old article but an interesting mention is about depenedence on Chinese silk). Cambodian silk weavers are getting help from private international relief organizations and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which ran an intensive research program in 1994-95 and established a traditional weaving center and also helped in reintroducing sericulture to reduce the dependence on Chinese Silk.
