Technology enabled NGOs in India
by mohrahit on Oct 25, 2007      Category: * Needs & Opportunities * Tags: india technology ngos
I was wondering if there are any studies which point towards the use of technology (especially information technology) in the NGO sector in India. I am looking for broad or direct answers to questions like:
~ Is there a need for automating internal processes of Indian NGOs? Has that already been achieved? What kind of processes/tools would a typical NGO require?
~ How many NGOs use IT tools in their operations?
~ How many NGOs are e-enabled? How many of them have websites (active/passive both)?
~ How many of them use e-mails?
~ How many use the internet for active campaigns?
Just wanted to understand the disconnect between web-based discussions, activism etc. and offline work.
Any pointers/ideas will be great!

Some of the questions here will require a detailed study by some agency (please share if you find something). For website/emails, one approximate approach would be to go to an NGO database (such as indiserve.org), pick 20-30 NGO's at random, and see how many of them have emails/websites. More the number of samples you choose, the better your statistical estimate would be. But, I sincerely hope some agency does a rigorous survey..would be very useful.
This would be very useful. Let me see if I can get any information on this.

technology is compendious issues, the role it plays varied from one organisations to other, in this case size dose matter. the principal role of NGO is to fill the gap , that a government in can not holistically can distribute it intended benefit, this where a ngo try to fill this gap at the bottom the chain, the role of technology dose varied on it utilization's ability. for some working women and child development, it would be better for some to have nascent idea on how to bring on some good health habits, giving or passing on right information, thing like that, of course a lot NGO are getting used to system more often. while this boon for some one this could bane for some, what ever it is just that trend is information technology, the limits of its should be known to individuals
Yes, technology is the need of the hour for individuals and organization. In view of the paradigm shift in the concept of service sector,it is inevitable for the NGOs / Civil Society Organizations to adopt for the use of technology including ICT. Many organizations have changed their attitude and started having using websites, blogs, emails, e-forums, e-news letters, search for info, support, dissemination, publicity, show casing and products. It is difficult to say in terms of numerals. Systematic study is required. Some of the universities can do this as a research study or project works by deploying the students of degree and post graduation.
Recently, National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped for the first time has organized a National Conference of Social Marketing - Disability Rehabilitation. It was wonderful and made a beginning to move forward for sustainability and quality. On this forum, i made a presentation on "uses of e-technologies in social marketing". It is the beginning and need to continue.
All the best
